I took the kids to ArtWalk in downtown Jacksonville last night. Even though the temperature was about 34 degrees, not including the wind chill, we had a blast.

We started at The Carling. They had some great portraits of some of the different people groups here in Jacksonville. They also had hot chocolate and cookies, which made all the difference in the world to the kids.

We also checked out the basement of the old Hayden Library at the corner of East Adams and Ocean Street. They had a couple of spots where anyone could paint on the walls or different canvases. The kids and I did some pretty interesting work.

We finished the night by taking Jeffrey Harrington’s (hdesign) advice and checking out the MOCA. They were having a great exhibit titled “Why Look at Animals?” It was fantastic. The kids also showed me the kids exhibition they have on the 5th floor.

The night ended with the all too familar crying and tantrums (kids can only be so good after 8pm you know) but also with a great surprise question. “Can we do that again sometime, dad?” Ahhhh.

Language Barrier or Excuse

Are there experts in your field that speak a different language than you?
Do you avoid reaching out to them because it’s uncomfortable?
How much would it take for you to get over being uncomfortable?

I think the tv show Amazing Race is one of the best examples of people getting over this feeling. In this show people have to travel the world while looking for clues and solving problems. Sure, it’s because they have a chance to win a bucket of money but it’s a great example of people trying to share important knowledge.

I’m a __________ (fill in the blank with currently popular term to describe someone who solves business needs with new or existing software).Though I was born and raised in the USA, my family has a strong Hispanic heritage. And while I can eventually convey my thoughts in Spanish, English is my first language.

In the technology industry I constantly meet experts who are not native English speakers. I approach these meetings in a way similar to that of the Amazing Race contestants. Simply put, I can’t get better if I don’t make the effort to communicate and understand the person who knows what I need to know.
I use tools like Google Translate and Windows Live Translator. Google also has a great mobile version which looks great, especially on the iPhone.

Face it, (Warning: Cliché ahead) the world is flat.
But more importantly with all the great things out there that you can learn, why would you want to live your life in a silo?

First Wednesdays In Jacksonville

I always have to make a tough choice on the first Wednesday of the month; The Arts or Technology?

See the problem is Jacksonville just kicks butt on the first Wednesday! You’ve got Art Walk and JaxDug. Art Walk always has a variety of events going on at the same time(Jacksonville Symphony, Pecha Kucha, etc.) while JaxDug has talks about various things (SEO, JQuery, etc.). I can quickly guess that some people might not have that hard of a time choosing between the two. :D For those choosing “neither” you can check out ExperienceJax.com to see what else is going on.

The point is, Jacksonville continues to show that it has many options to choose from for those looking to learn, grow, and have fun.

Plans for Tonight

RSVP’d for the Cuban inspired reception at the Cummer Museum. According to the description I read over on the news section of the fun local young professionals social group it looks to be pretty fun.
